The ILJ grant to study police and prosecutor projects funded under VAWA is part of a larger NIJ initiative to evaluate the Act's implementation.

Following the enactment of the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 (VAWA), many government and private organizations collaborated to offer assistance to individuals and families struggling with problems related to domestic violence.

Under a grant from the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), U.S. Department of Justice, the Institute for Law and Justice (ILJ) collected references and organizational contacts of practical or legal and educational use to families, justice professionals, or mental health and social service professionals.

The Urban Institute evaluated activities funded under Chapter 2 of VAWA and, together with a consortium of other evaluating organizations, and documented a range of programs, grantee planning and implementation efforts, and strategies for assessing long-term impact.
